Preliminary version awaiting approval during IRGO business meeting at ISO20.

Minutes of the IRGO business meeting held on 22nd July 2022 during the 19th International Symposium on Ostracoda (ISO19), in Lyon, France.

Chair: Moriaki Yasuhara; Vice-Chair: Vincent Perrier; Past Chair: Finn Viehberg; Secretary: Ilaria Mazzini; Communication Officer: Robin J. Smith; Treasurer: Renate Matzke-Karasz and 97 delegates (57 delegates in person and 40 delegates remotely) were present.

At 14:10, the Chair opens the session, presents the agenda and conducts the meeting. The Secretary takes the minutes.

1-Welcome

The chair welcomed the delegates and thanked the Organising committee of the 19 ISO for the excellent organization of the Symposium.

2- Minutes of the ISO18 IRGO business meeting, held in Santa Barbara, USA, August 2017.

The minutes of the previous business meeting were approved as representing a faithful record of the session with 97 votes in favour and none against.

3- Memorials

The following friends and colleagues have passed away since August 2017 and to their memory and honour a minute of silence was observed:

4- Financial report from the treasurer (SF*IRGO)

IRGO’s financial report from the Treasurer.

The Treasurer (and Chair of SF*IRGO) presented IRGO’s financial report, since 2017.

The Treasure presents the financial situation of 2017 (balance brought forward 2,386€), of 2018 (bbf -1,228.97€), of 2019 (bbf 3,995.06€), of 2020 (1,494.34€), of 2021 (bbf -590.37€), 2022 (-940.00€). The development of the SF*IRGO funds is illustrated and the total sum of money currently available in the SF*IRGO bank accounts is 8,321.13€)

5- IRGO activities for 2017-2022

The Chair illustrates the activities carried on after the ISO18.

He invites all ostracod researchers to submit their reports to Cypris.

The activities concerning IRGO and Ostracod research are:

The 9th European Ostracodologists‘ Meeting (EOM9) (19 to 22 July 2019 in Gdansk, Poland organized by Tadeusz Namiotko), great success (report).

The 4th Asian Ostracod Meeting (6–10 August 2018 in Kanazawa, Japan organized by Takahiro Kamiya), great success.

The Chair illustrates the connections between IRGO and the Crustacean Society and the International Paleontological association.

IRGO/SF*IRGO provided travel support for IPC5 Paris for young ostracod researchers.

The Chair invites the delegates to join the joint IPC6 and AOM in Thailand (7–11 Nov 2022).

 

Upcoming: 10th European Ostracodologists’ Meeting (EOM10) (Italy, 2024): Ilaria Mazzini presents the meeting that will be held in Catania (Sicily, Italy) 16-23 September 2024.

Elly Browers reports that Cypris is nearly ready to and that it is critical to have a server for this issue and all archival issues to be posted and accessible. 

6- ISO20 venue

Three propositions were made by presenting spectacular and informative talks: China, Bejing, presented by Moriaki Yasuhara on behalf of the Chinese ostracod research group; Mexico, Chetumal (Yukatán peninsula), video presentation by Sergio Cohuo Durán; Turkey, Bolu, video presentation by Okan Külköylüoglu. The vote was taken, resulting in 36 votes for China (22 in person, 14 online), 32 votes for Mexico (22 in person, 10 online) and 13 votes for Turkey (5 in person and 8 online). A total of 81 participants voted.

7- Prizes

The Chair gives the recognition to the 3 students that were granted the SF*IRGO Travel Grants to participate in this ISO here in Lyon: Maria Bisquert Ribes (University of Valencia, Spain); Valentini Navrozidou (Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece); Maria Tsoni (University of Patras, Greece).

The first Order of the Amphidont Hinge was awarded to Professor David John Siveter. Vincent Perrier gave a laudation to David Siveter, highlighting his amazing research on Paleozoic ostracods all over the world and the celebrating his career.

The second Order of the Amphidont Hinge was awarded to Professor Dan Danielopol. Angel Baltanas gave a laudation to Dan Danielopol (video recorded), celebrating his long career and commitment in advancing the knowledge about limnology, groundwater ecology and ostracodology, including morphometry.

The best poster award for young researcher supported by SF*IRGO was awarded to Kai Pfennings (Marine Research Department, Senckenberg am Meer, Germany) on 3D traits in ostracod shells. Close behind was the poster of Michalina Kijowska (University of Gdańsk, Poland) on the Phylogenetics of the Candonidae.

The Sylvester-Bradley Award for the best oral presentation supported by TMS  was awarded to Mauricio Bonilla-Flores (Technische Universität Braunschweig, Germany) for his talk on Tonnacypris. Close behind was the talk by Daisuke Nakamura (Shizuoka University, Japan) on the correlation between the copulatory appendages and the pore types.

8- Election of next IRGO Officers

The vote was taken, resulting in 52 votes for Vincent Perrier (44 in person and 8 online) and 11 votes for Ian Boomer (2 in person and 9 online).

9- Any Other Business

  1. establishment of a small working group of 5 or 6 persons with experience of senior positions in other scientific societies (and not current members of the IRGO or SF*IRGO committees) possibly chaired by the incoming IRGO chair to prepare a written constitution for IRGO that sets out the guidelines for IRGO (for example: roles and terms of office of IRGO Officers, mechanisms for proposing new officer roles).

Ian Boomer explains that it is useful to have written rules to help the IRGO chairs. The group will be formed outside the IRGO officers

  1. proposal that the Editor of Cypris would, by default, be an officer of the IRGO committee.

The Chair asks Elly Brouwers whether she wants to become an IRGO officer as Editor of Cypris. Elly stated that she is honored and delighted to be able to join the IRGO board.

10- Acknowledgements and adjournment

The Chair thanked the IRGO steering committee members for their collaboration during the past four years.
