International Symposium on Ostracoda 1963
The Symposium on „Ostracods as Ecological and Palaeoecological Indicators“ was held at the Zoological Station of Naples in 1963 (10 – 19 June), at the invitation of Harbans S. Puri. The proceedings were published as: „Ostracods as Ecological and Palaeoecological Indicators,“ Pubblicazioni della Stazione Zoologica di Napoli, vol. 33 (supplement), 612 pp. (H.S. Puri, ed.) in 1964. For information on current availability of this volume, write to the Zoological Station, Instituto di Paleontologia della Universita, Largo S. Marcellino 10, 80138 Napoli, Italy.
Only a few pictures exist of this event, but fortunately six color photos have been preserved (credit: H.J. Oertli). The only woman on these images, Gesa Hartmann-Schröder, coauthored several publications on ostracods with her husband Gerd Hartmann, but was a leading polychaete systematist.
Fourty years after this first symposium, ISO17 took place in Italy again, this time in Rome. In her welcome note to this symposium, the then chair of the IRGO board, Renate Matzke-Karasz, reflected on the first meeting in Naples. Her presentation is available here.
The drawings on this page are part of the publication by G. W. Müller on ‚Die Ostracoden‘ in vol. 8 of the series ‚Wissenschaftliche Ergebnisse der Deutschen Tiefsee-Expedition auf dem Dampfer „Valdivia“ 1898-1899‘ (ed. C. Chun), 1906.
